When is a nursing home the safer choice?
These signs open the family conversation. Ask your parent’s doctor to assess what they actually need, and decide with your parent.
- They need someone awake at night
- They need help to wash, eat or get up most days
- They fall often or can no longer be left alone
- The relatives looking after them are worn out
- Round-the-clock shifts at home would cost more than a place in a home
When is home care enough?
While your parent is safe alone for part of the day, a relative or neighbour drops by, and the needs are occasional: injections, dressings, blood tests, help with bathing a few times a week. Our guide to home care in Addis Ababa sets out the options.

What should I check when visiting a nursing home?
Go at least twice, once at a mealtime. If you are abroad, send a trusted relative with this list and ask them to film the rooms, with the manager’s permission. Before a long contract, start with a short trial stay.

Is there a nursing home for dementia in Addis Ababa?
Grace Nursing Home, near Ayat Square, describes a memory care programme for people with dementia or Alzheimer’s. Ask the other homes directly, and visit before deciding.
Who checks that a care home is authorised in Addis Ababa?
Ask the home which authority licensed it, and to see the certificate. For nursing care, the Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority certifies health facilities and licenses health professionals (8864).
Can my parent try a short stay first?
Enat and Grace describe short-term as well as long-term stays; ask the others. A few weeks’ trial shows whether your parent settles before you sign a long contract.
